Greater Orlando Sports Commission Welcomes George Diaz To The Team

The Greater Orlando Sports Commission (GO Sports) is pleased to announce 29-year Orlando Sentinel veteran journalist George Diaz will join the GO Sports editorial team as a content contributor for the organization.

“We are thrilled to have George Diaz join our team,” said Jason Siegel, President & CEO of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission. “George has earned a tremendous amount of respect as a journalist in our community, and we couldn’t be more excited for him to cover upcoming events and the impact that sports tourism has across Greater Orlando.”

His first story for GO Sports, about March Madness returning to Orlando, will be released on Tuesday, February 28. Diaz spoke to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and also interviewed current Orlando Magic players and UCF Men’s Basketball Coach Johnny Dawkins as they recalled their personal experience of playing and coaching in the NCAA DI Men’s Basketball Championship.

Diaz is a graduate of the University of Florida’s School of Journalism, and worked at The Miami Herald and Cincinnati Post before joining The Orlando Sentinel sports department in 1989 to cover the Florida Gators. He covered a wide range of sports including eight Olympics, a half dozen Super Bowls, numerous world championship boxing matches, and NBA Finals before leaving sports to join the Sentinel Editorial Board in July of 2006.

He rejoined the Sentinel sports department as a columnist in the spring of 2009 until his departure in November of 2018.

Diaz has since worked with Growing Bolder, a multi-media organization focused on older adults who have inspirational stories to share, and most recently, as a contributor with Orlando Magazine. You can follow him on Twitter @georgediaz.
